Lech Poznań began the spring round of PKO BP Ekstraklasa in the best possible way – with a confident win. Niels Frederiksen’s squad beat Widzew Łódź 4:1 at home; Afonso Sousa and Mikael Ishak both got a brace.
On Friday, the Polish top division resumed after a nearly two-months-long break. Lech spent the winter preparations in a Turkish city called Lara where they played a few friendly matches – against Dinamo Zagreb, Botev Plovdiv, and Čukarički Belgrad. After their return to Poznań, Niels Frederiksen’s squad also faced Nordsjaelland as the last “test” before the league resumed. On Friday, Lech welcomed Widzew Łódź at Bułgarska Street – it was a perfect opportunity to take revenge for the 1:2 loss in the 2nd round of PKO BP Ekstraklasa.
The opening minutes of the match were chaotic – in the 2nd minute, Samuel Kozlovsky found the back of the net after receiving a great cross from Sebastian Kerk, however, VAR spotted an offside, and the goal was disallowed. Not long later, the hosts were the ones celebrating after Afonso Sousa ended his impressive individual run with a precise shot from a sharp angle. Before the referee announced halftime, Mikael Ishak set the score to 2:0 in a one-on-one clash with Widzew’s keeper.
In the second 45 minutes, Lech continued causing problems to the defensive line from Łódź. Sousa added his name to the goal scorers’ list once again, this time with a beautiful shot from outside the box. Widzew replied with a lethal counterattack which Kozlovsky converted into a goal, but that didn’t stop Lech from scoring the fourth goal – Ishak took advantage of Hakans’ pass and set the final score to 4:1. As a result, Lech increased their point advantage over their rivals.
