The best in this century

In the recent match against Stal Mielec (3:1), Lech scored three goals in a single game for the twelfth time this season. In terms of average goals scored per match, Lech’s offensive line is the best it’s been in the 21st century.

In the last two home games, Skorża’s squad found the back of the net 6 times which means that over the course of this season, Lech has scored 61 goals. It’s the best result from all top-division sides, however, even more importantly, the team from Poznań is close to achieving an average of 1.97 goals per game which is Lech’s record of the 21st century. In the past months, Skorża’s players have also frequently finished league games with two goals on their account. If we look at Lech’s achievements in the past years, it was Dariusz Żuraw’s squad from 2019/2020 that had the best average (1.89 goals/game). In the previous campaign, under the lead of the same coach for a majority of the season, Lech did significantly worse – they found the back of the net only 39 times in total.

“I wouldn’t compare the current team with that from the last season. Prior to this campaign, we made changes in the squad, as well as in our approach and tactics. We look good in defense, we rarely concede goals, and at the same time, our offensive line is working very efficiently. What’s important is that in the past few games, we have been scoring regularly and there were rarely any goalless streaks,” explained Radosław Murawski who played the whole 90 minutes in the recent clash with Stal Mielec.

According to the midfielder, there is one key factor that influences Lech’s efficiency in scoring – it’s the shared responsibility of multiple players. This league season, 16 different players have found the back of the net. There are numerous players willing to step up, even when Lech’s main goalscorers – Mikael Ishak and Joao Amaral – fail to beat the goalkeeper. “Whenever Mikael or Joao don’t score in a match or two, Kownacki does it. There are a few other players capable of finding the back of the net, such as Kuba Kamiński or Michał Skóraś. That’s a great thing since instead of focusing the offense on a single player, the responsibility is naturally shared between numerous players,” highlighted the midfielder.

Good performance in the offense has an influence on the squad’s confidence and trust in their ability to deliver even when things go south. An unexpected, conceded goal in the first couple of minutes against Stal didn’t make Skorża’s squad doubt themselves. They knew that they had nearly 90 minutes left – enough time to score plenty of goals, win the match and add three league points to their account. “We didn’t panic, we showed class and, despite having to chase the score, we achieved our objective without any problems. Resilience is one thing, and efficiency in the offense is another. We create many goal-scoring opportunities, especially when playing at home, hence we knew that we would be able to score the two goals that we needed [to win]. We have four games left to go this season. For me, these will be my last matches at Lech for a while, hence I am ready to give my all,” emphasized Jakub Kamiński who has scored 8 goals this season so far.
