The upcoming match against Piast Gliwice will mark the beginning of the final phase of the season. With two-thirds of the campaign already behind us, the team from Poznań has 10 games left to play and 30 points to win.
After 20 league rounds, Dariusz Żuraw’s team is ranked 6th in the PKO BP Ekstraklasa table. The recent wins – against Śląsk Wrocław (1:0), Warta Poznań (2:1), and Pogoń Szczecin (1:0) – helped the team from Poznań improve their situation in the league competition and jump into the top 8. However, Lech is aiming much higher and the current rank is far from satisfactory. The good news is that over the past few weeks, the squad from Bułgarska street managed to decrease the gap to places that guarantee a spot in European competition qualifiers.
Theoretically, the fourth position in the Ekstraklasa table could enable Lech to compete in Europa League qualifiers, however, only on the condition that the Fortuna Polish Cup winner is ranked in the top 3 in the league. Looking at the teams that qualified for the semifinals, Raków Częstochowa is the most likely to finish on the podium. Still, for Lech to have a guaranteed spot in the Europa Conference League qualifying phase, the team from Poznań needs to climb into the top 3. With 10 matches to go, Lech is 7 points behind Raków and Pogoń who are occupying respectively the third and second rank.
There are still 30 points to be won and last year’s campaign proved that a lot can happen at the finish line. The final phase of the previous season undoubtedly belonged to Lech – the team from Poznań won 7 times and got 3 draws, finishing 7 points above Zagłębie Lubin and Górnik Zabrze. Therefore, if Lech manage to repeat the achievement, the objective of playing on the international arena would become reality.
The squad from Bułgarska street has 6 home games and 4 away matches left to play. In the upcoming three clashes, they will face teams from the bottom 8 – Piast Gliwice, Jagiellonia and Cracovia. Then Lech will be challenged by rivals who are ranked higher in the league table, that is Legia Warsaw, Raków Częstochowa and Lechia Gdańsk. In the last two matches of the 2020/2021 campaign, the team from Poznań is going to face two clubs that are fighting to avoid relegation – Wisła Cracow and Górnik Zabrze.
