Filip Szymczak extended his contract with Lech Poznań. The 21-year-old reached an agreement with the club which will last until June 30th, 2027. “Filip had a valid contract, but we wanted him to feel recognised and appreciated because we believe that in the upcoming seasons, he will become an even bigger key player in the senior squad,” said Lech’s Vice-President, Piotr Rutkowski.
Filip joined Lech’s Academy from another, local football club – Warta – in 2013. Ever since he has been making continuous progress. Filip won a U-17 and U-19 Polish Championship and advanced to the central level with Lech’s B team 4 years ago. The young forward became a part of the senior squad in the 2018/19 season, under the lead of Dariusz Żuraw. He gained crucial experience in senior football whilst on loan at GKS Katowice where he scored 11 goals and earned his return to Lech. It was coach John van den Brom who started giving Szymczak more minutes on the pitch. The forward repaid the trust with good performances – he scored an important goal against Hapoel in the Europa Conference League (1:1) and made a difference in a league clash with Korona Kielce (3:2) and Jagiellonia Białystok (2:1).
“I am happy with the past few months; I feel that I made progress. The return from a loan might not have been that hard, but it was challenging because I had to adapt to the system, and it took me some time to find a rhythm. I believe that I showed my potential, but I remain hungry for more and demand from myself regular performances of good quality. I know that I can play even better. I hope to show that during the pre-season after I return from my injury,” said Filip.
Szymczak’s previous agreement would have ended in June 2025. However, the club extended the contract for another 2 years this week.
“He’s a homegrown player who entrusted us and we want to extend the agreement. It’s a common practice here at Lech. Filip had a valid contract, but we wanted him to feel recognised and appreciated because we believe that in the upcoming seasons, he will become an even bigger key player in the senior squad. We adapted a similar approach with Jakub Kamiński, and previously with Jakub Moder, Kamil Jóźwiak, and Michał Skóraś. We want to show that we value our homegrown player and give him responsibility in the context of the upcoming months. We are confident that Filip, with the character and attitude that he has, will do great,” explained Lech’s Vice-President, Piotr Rutkowski.
“I am thrilled about the contract extension. Lech is my club, I am a homegrown player, hence it’s even more amazing news. It’s a long contract but it doesn’t change the fact that I ought to prove my worth every season. I want to do that,” emphasized Filip, who also gave a reassuring comment regarding his injury. “I underwent a complex check-up and everything is going in the right direction. The recovery is going according to plan, and even if at a certain stage we decide to take more time, it’s to ensure that when the preseason starts, I can train with my teammates normally. At the moment, I practice smoothing my moves, and in a few days I will be back on the pitch,” informed the forward.
