On Thursday evening, Lech Poznań defeated Vikingur Reykjavik 4:1 in the second leg of Europa Conference League qualifiers. As a result, John van den Brom’s squad advanced to the playoffs.
The Icelandic team dominated in the opening minutes of the match but failed to convert their advantage into a goal. Meanwhile, Lech was more efficient in their offensive attempt and within 30 minutes, they found the back of the net for the first time that night. Kristoffer Velde set up Mikael Ishak with a great pass and Lech’s captain converted it into a volley on target. Before the referee announced halftime, the hosts added another goal to their account – this time, it was the Norwegian winger who placed the ball in the back of the net following a beautiful, perfectly-timed cross from Joel Pereira. With an aggregate score of 2:1, it was Lech that was closer to making it to the playoffs.
Lech continued with the same determination in the second half, eager to seal the promotion to the fourth qualifying round. However, the players from Poznań lacked precision in the last phase of their offensive attempts. The wasted opportunities took revenge on the hosts in the added time when, just seconds before the final whistle, Danijel Djuric beat Filip Bednarek. An aggregate score of 2:2 meant extra time.
However, the additional half an hour of play was dominated by Lech who, shortly into the added part of the game, changed the score again – this time thanks to Filip Marchwiński. Not long later, Vikingur was forced to play in 10 men when their captain Julius Magnusson received a second yellow, and as a result a red card. One minute before the final whistle, Afonso Sousa set the final score to 4:1 with the help of Filip Szymczak. As a result, the Portuguese midfielder made up for the penalty kick which he failed to convert into a goal just a few minutes earlier.
In the last qualifying round of the Europa Conference League, Lech will face the Luxembourg champions – F91 Dudelange. The first leg is scheduled for Thursday next week, at 8:30 pm (Poznań Stadium). The two teams will play the second match the following week, at 8:00 pm.
