The Fortuna Polish Cup final is out of the question for Lech Poznań. John van den Brom’s team was eliminated from the competition in the round of 16 by Śląsk Wrocław (1:3).
An intense match schedule and a few minor injuries resulted in changes in the starting line-up. The likes of Artur Rudko and Artur Sobiech have reappeared in the first eleven after a long break. Unfortunately, the Ukrainian goalkeeper had to take the ball out of his own net for the first time 6 minutes into the match when Erik Exposito placed the ball in the goal from a free-kick.
Lech responded with an intensified offense, and it didn’t take the team from Poznań long to equalize. Afonso Sousa beat Rafał Leszczyński with an impressive technical shot. The hosts kept on putting pressure on Śląsk’s defensive line but they failed to convert their dominance into a second goal. Similarly, at the beginning of the second half, Lech had a decent goal-scoring opportunity but Gio Tsitaisvili’s good attempt was stopped by the keeper.
The last 15 minutes of the match turned out to be decisive. One of Rudko’s unfortunate interventions during which the goalkeeper failed to keep the ball in his hands resulted in John Yeboah tapping the ball into the back of the net. The same player, 5 minutes later, beat the Ukrainian keeper once again and set the score to 3:0. As a result, Śląsk advanced to the round of 8 of the Fortuna Polish Cup.
On Sunday, Lech will have an opportunity to bounce in an away league game against Cracovia (5:30 pm).
