In the round of 8 of the Polish Cup Lech Poznan won with Ruch Chorzow 1:0, and therefore they advance to the next phase where the team from Greater Poland will face Zaglebie Lubin.
Last time Lech faced Ruch Chorzow in the Polish Cup was back in 2009. 6 years ago the two club fought in the final where the team from Poznan turned out to be better once again, winning 1:0 thanks to Slawomir Peszko's goal. In tonights match Skorzas players hoped to repeat the achievement and once again triumph.
After the recent games, which Lech played very poorly, the hosts wanted to prove to the fans gathered at INEA Stadium that they won't neglect the Polish Cup, and therefore they attacked their rival the moment the referee whistled for the first time. Dariusz Formella had his goal-scoring opportunity in the opening minutes, Pawlowski had one too, but neither of them managed to place the ball in the net. Kownacki and Hamalainen could have scored as well, but their shots were too weak to cause problems to Skaba.
Ruch focused mainly on the defense and it wasn't until five minutes before halftime that they got their first goal-scoring opportunity. Lipinski was the one who attempted to beat Gostomski with a shot from outside the penalty area, but it wasn't on target and so the score remained a blank tie. Shortly afterwards Ceesay made a mistake when trying to clear the ball out and in the result Gogolajev took it over and passed to Stepinski. If it wasnt for Kaminski, the offensive actions might have caused more trouble to Lech.
Similarly, in the second half Lech attacked more often than its opponent. 2 minutes after the referee began the second part of the match Pawlowski had another opportunity to score. However, the goalkeeper made sure that the ball did not fall into the back of the net. Nonetheless, in the 50th minute the score changed. Ceesay raced down the right flank and passed to Jevtic right in front of the penalty area. The Swiss player sent the ball flying on target, but because on its way into the net it was redirected by one of the defenders, the shot was classified as an own goal.
Lech did not cease its offensive actions and they continued pressing on their rival. Even though Skorza's players had many opportunities to change the score once again, their attacks were inefficient. Jevtic had two chances of his own, but both his shots were not on target. In the injury time the guests started dominating with a clear aim to equalize and call for extra time. However, because Ruch failed to place the ball in the net on the Wednesday evening, Lech Poznan was the team that advanced to the round of 4 where Zaglebie Lubin has already been waiting.
