PKO Ekstraklasa announced Robert Gumny best youth player of July. The 21-year-old is the first Lech Poznan footballer to be given this award. He was officially presented with the trophy before the Friday clash with Slask Wroclaw.
The defender has been performing impressively throughout the past few weeks. His great form enabled him to pass his teammate Kamil Jozwiak and Bartosz Bida (Jagiellonia Bialystok) in the race for the title. In July, Gumny appeared in two matches and although he failed to score and got no assists – neither did his rivals though which emphasizes his effectiveness – he guarded the goal confidently and actively engaged with his teammates in the offensive.
However, it wasn’t the first time that Lech’s homegrown defender was nominated for the award. In December last year, Gumny came close to winning the race, however, Radoslaw Majecki (Legia Warsaw) was announced the winner. Nonetheless, in July, the youngster from Poznan was finally recognized for his outstanding performances. He was presented with a trophy shortly before the kick-off of the Friday clash with Slask Wroclaw. Lech Poznan is the seventh club whose youth player was awarded this trophy.
All players born in 1998 or younger and have a Polish nationality can compete for the Youth Player of the Month award. Top 3 footballers – along with the winner – are chosen on the base of statistics, as well as behaviour on and off the pitch.
