For the second time this season, Lech faced a lower-tier opponent – this time it was Arka Gdynia whom the team from Poznań drew in the Fortuna Polish Cup. The squad from the seaside is ranked first in the second division which suggested that the match would not be an easy one.
Arka Gdynia has been performing impressively in the past months. The team won the last 9 out of 10 games and drew once. As a result of this incredible form, Wojciech Łobodziński’s squad is ranked at the top of the Fortuna 1. Liga table.
Nonetheless, Lech was deemed the favourite of the clash. However, the opening minutes of the game did not reflect that – early in the match, Antonio Milić made a mistake which put Karol Czubak one-on-one with Filip Bednarek. Fortunately for the guests, the goalkeeper intervened successfully. Gradually, Lech started causing problems to Arka’s defensive line more frequently. Kristoffer Velde had two chances to change the score, but the goalkeeper Paweł Lenarcik stopped both shots. Finally, Lech converted one of the goal-scoring opportunities into a goal when Velde sent a precise cross to Dino Hotić who extended the pass to Filip Marchwiński. The young striker placed the ball in the net.
John van den Brom’s team was also in control of the second half despite struggling to create more goal-scoring chances. In the last phase of the match, the hosts intensified their efforts but managed to scare Lech just once, and Bednarek successfully stopped the shot. The 1:0 win was enough for the team from Poznań to advance to the quarterfinals of the Fortuna Polish Cup where they will face Pogoń Szczecin.
