Elias Andersson is now officially a Lech Poznań player. The Swedish defender is joining the Polish club on a permanent transfer from Djurgårdens IF. Andersson signed a three-year contract with Lech, with a one-year extension clause.
Everything happened in the blink of an eye. On Monday afternoon, Andersson arrived in Poznań with his family and his manager. On that same day, the medical tests began and lasted until Tuesday morning. Shortly after 2 pm, the Swede signed a contract with Lech.
“We signed Elias from the Swedish club Djurgårdens IF on a permanent transfer. The contract will last until June 30th 2026 and includes a 12-month extension clause. Our new player is a left-footed defender; he will compete for a spot in the starting line-up with Barry Douglas who has recently extended his contract,” explained Lech’s Sporting Director, Tomasz Rząsa. “Andersson is another Swede who is joining our squad. He has already represented his national team in the past. Last season, we faced Andersson’s previous team [Djurgårdens IF] in Europa Conference League. He is a defender with good ball control, perfectly fitting our philosophy of play. He has a very good cross, and is a strong player with the right mentality – similarly to all the other Swedes in our squad,” added Rząsa.
27-year-old joined Djurgårdens IF back in January 2021. The Swedish side was Lech’s rival in the round of 16 of the Europa Conference League last season. The defender is in a match rhythm since the Swedish league plays in the spring-autumn system. On Sunday, Andersson competed in a league clash with Varbergs BoIS (2:0) and got an assist. He started his career at Helsinborgs IF where he also debuted at the highest level of Swedish football, back in 2013 when he was just 17. So far, he made 139 appearances in the Swedish top division, scored 12 times, and got 22 assists.
“I come from the south of Sweden and I play on the left defence, but I can also compete in the midfield. I already know a bit about Lech, including that is a very big Polish club with absolutely incredible supporters. The stadium is massive and truly fantastic,” emphasised Andersson. “I cannot wait to join the club and begin playing here; I am also excited to see the fans in the stands and perform for them,” added the defender.
In January this year, Andersson received a call-up from the Swedish national team and made an appearance in the friendly match against Iceland (2:1). He marked his debut with a winning goal from a free kick.
The defender chose to play with number 5 on his back at Lech. On Tuesday, after signing the contract, Andersson flew back to Sweden where he will play two more league matches – against IFK Värnamo on July 9th, and then against Malmö FF 8 days later.
"Djurgårdens IF is in the middle of the league season; they have their objectives and one of the conditions of the negotiations was Elias playing in the two matches. Therefore, the defender will rejoin us on July 18th, but what matters is that he is in a match rhythm and will be ready to take on the challenges here at Lech,” explained the Sporting Director.
