A very difficult task
Lech Poznań won the first leg of the clash with Qarabag FK. However, the fight for a spot in the second qualifying round of the Champions League is still on. Not only is Lech’s opponent experienced and capable of turning around the score, but also the Polish side will play the second leg in challenging weather conditions.
Usually, when Polish teams traveled to the Caucasus in the past, they were warned about the weather conditions and encouraged to expect the worst. And indeed, it was true – whenever Polish clubs visited countries such as Azerbaijan, Armenia, or Georgia, they were met with a very hot climate.
The heat one experiences when getting off an airplane in Baku is abnormous. Aside from stuffy, hot air, there is an ever-present smell of petroleum coming from the Caspian Sea. On Tuesday, when Lech is going to face Qarabag FK in Baku, the weather forecast shows 36-degree Celsius heat.
But there is also good news – the last 4 times that Lech visited Azerbaijan, they played at the Tofiq Bahramov Republican Stadium twice. The stadium’s location is very specific which means that if matches are played in the evening, there is no direct sunshine. As a result, the players compete in less intense heat which makes their job much easier. However, in all that, it’s important not to forget the class of Lech’s opponent who played in the group phase of the European competition 8 times in a row.
“I am happy with the 1:0 goal – it was a very good goal. It boosted our self-confidence. For me, it was important to win the first official match at the new club. Now it’s time to Focus on the next game and the return leg, knowing we haven’t yet made our way into the next round. It will be a difficult match and we need to be prepared as well as possible,” explained Lech’s coach, John van den Brom.
