Śląsk Wrocław - Lech Poznań 3:1

Lech Poznań resumed the league fight after the March international break but failed to get back on the winning track and lost their second match in a row. This time, Niels Frederiksen’s squad was defeated by Śląsk Wrocław – the last team in the league table – 3:1 in an away clash.

For the first time since the end of August, Lech didn’t start their league game as the current leader of PKO BP Ekstraklasa. After the 1:2 loss against Jagiellonia Białystok, Frederiksen and his players dropped down to the third position behind the current Polish Champions and Raków Częstochowa. Lech had a perfect opportunity to overpass the former team because Jagiellonia surprisingly lost 0:1 against Lechia Gdańsk.

However, things didn’t go as planned for Lech on Saturday evening. Śląsk Wrocław quickly opened the scoring sheet – Patrik Walemark’s playmaking mistake resulted in Assad Al-Hamlawi scoring a goal from outside the box. The squad from Poznań was determined to equalize as soon as possible, but Rafał Leszczyński stopped Filip Jagiełło’s attempt, whereas Mikael Ishak’s shot hit the post. Finally, at the end of the first half, Frederiksen’s players caught up to their rival – Walemark was fouled inside Śląsk’s box and Ishak confidently converted the set piece into an equalizer.

In the second half, neither of the sides was as decisive in their opponent’s penalty area, but only until the 64th minute, when things took a turn. Śląsk’s offensive attempt resulted in the ball bouncing off the post and then off Dino Hotic, before Al-Hamlawi tapped it into Lech’s net. Frederiksen’s squad tried to get back in the game but seemed to lack ideas on how to change the score again. In the added time, the hosts set the final score to 3:1 thanks to Petr Schwarz, who converted a penalty kick into the last goal of the night.
