Not only are the European Championships just around the corner, but the national teams are about to begin the qualifications for the next year’s World Cup in Qatar. Meanwhile, the Polish U-21 squad led by Maciej Stolarczyk has set eyes on getting a spot in the Euro 2023. Here is what awaits Lech Poznań players during the upcoming international break.
Michał Skóraś, Jakub Kamiński, Filip Marchwiński and, for the first time, Filip Szymczak were called up by the Poland U-21 coach. Maciej Stolarczyk replaced the previous manager, Czesław Michniewicz, back in October and his task now is to prepare the youth squad for qualifications for the 2023 European Championships in Romania and Georgia. Lech’s Academy stars have the chance to fill in the shoes of the likes of Robert Gumny and Przemysław Płacheta, and become key figures in the U-21 team. The youth squad has two international matches scheduled for March – against Saudi Arabia on the 26th and Austria on the 29th. The Euro 2023 qualifications are due to begin in September, with Latvia being Poland’s first opponent.
“Our hard work has paid off and resulted in being called up by the national team coach and the fact that we are being recognised is a real motivation boost,” said Michał Skóraś recently.
Meanwhile, Lubomir Šatka was called to join Slovakia for the upcoming games against Cyprus (24.03), Malta (27.03), and Russia (30.03). The centre-back has been coach Tarkovic’s first-choice player recently. The 25-year-old appeared on the pitch in the play-off match against Northern Ireland where the qualification to this year’s European Championships was at stake – the Slovakian squad won 2:1 in extra time and is going to compete in the summer tournament. Tarkovic’s team will face Sweden, Spain and Poland in the group phase of Euro, with the latter being Slovakia’s first opponent. Whereas, in the qualifications for next year’s World Cup in Qatar, Lubomir Šatka and his teammates are going to compete against Russia, Croatia, Slovenia, Malta and Cyprus.
Nika Kvekvesikiri is also going to have a chance to appear on the international pitches as he received a call-up from the Georgian national team. The midfielder and the rest of the squad are going to face Sweden (25.03), Spain (28.03) and Greece (31.03) during this international break. Apart from the mentioned teams, Georgia is also going to compete against Kosovo in the qualifications for next year’s World Cup.
