Lech Poznań - Lechia Gdańsk 1:0

Lech Poznan won the 24th league match of the season. Radoslaw Majewski’s goal helped the team from Poznan secure a one-nil win at home. Lechia was forced to finish the game with 9 men only after Kuswik and Peszko received red cards.

The match was expected to be the most exhilarating clash of the league round. Both teams were having a successful run of wins and with 5 points between them, the fight for the top spot in the table remained ongoing. The importance of the game seemed to have impacted the players since the opening minutes of the match were chaotic and full of errors.

The hosts were the first ones to attack. In the 11th minute, Majewski converted a corner kick into a cross and the ball reached Bednarek who, unfortunately for Lech, was blocked at the last moment. 4 minutes later the team from Poznan got the first good goal scoring chance. Robak’s well-timed pass put Majewski one-on-one with the goalkeeper. However, the midfielder’s shot was successfully stopped by the keeper.

Meanwhile, Lech needed to watch out for Lechia’s counterattacks. In the 17th minute, van Kessel passed to Wolski and the latter raced into the box and spotted Peszko, who was unmarked in the penalty area. However, the pass was intercepted by Kostevych at the right time. Shortly afterwards Wilusz was forced to intervene when Kuswik came close to scoring after a chaotic play in Lech’s box.

The team from Poznan also had their goal scoring opportunities. In the 29th minute Robak’s brilliant pass initiated an offensive action. Majewski received the ball, dribbled past the defending players and sent the ball to Pawlowski. Nevertheless, the winger turned out to be slower than Lechia’s goalkeeper and the chance was wasted. On the other end of the pitch, Kedziora was busy stopping Lechia’s counterattacks, especially the ones led by Peszko.

During halftime Bjelica was sent off to the stands after he attacked Peszko, therefore the team from Poznan needed to keep on playing without their coach by the sidelines. Nonetheless, Lech reacted to the new situation very well and in the 50th minute they came close to scoring again. This time Makuszewski was the one who passed and Tralka finished off the action, however, the latter failed to control the ball and the goalkeeper caught it in time.

Lechia was determined to win the match and since the guests were in possession of the ball for the majority of the time, Lech’s only option was to counterattack. However, the hosts struggled to convert the fast offensive actions into a goal. One time Tetteh recovered the ball and sent it to Robak, but the forward lost the ball and yet another opportunity went to waste.

In the 64th minute, Lech scored a goal… but it was ruled offside. Robak’s shot caused problems to Lechia’s goalkeeper and Majewski tapped the ball into the net after the keeper failed to catch it. A couple of minutes later Lech placed the ball in the net again and this time they did it in accordance with the rules of the game. Makuszewski’s well-timed pass to Tralka, who was running into the box, was redirected by the midfielder to Robak and the latter left the ball for Majewski. The 30-year-old didn’t hesitate and fired a strong shot that found its way into the back of the net.

Lechia focused on scoring an equaliser, but they had a difficult task since Kuswik was sent off the pitch following a brutal foul on Bednarek and the guests had only 10 men on the field. Shortly afterwards, Peszko hit Kedziora with an elbow and received a red card as well. However, that wasn’t the end of trouble for Lechia. Milinkovic-Savic’s protests directed at the referee resulted in yet another, third red card.

Piotr Nowak’s team decided to risk it and changed the formation to a one with 3 defenders. However, that only left Lech more space to counterattack. In the 84th minute, Kownacki’s volley was blocked by one of the defending players at the last moment. A couple of minutes later Tralka was the one who finished off a team action, but his header was off target. Nonetheless, Lech remained focused on securing the desirable score and, therefore, their offensive attempts were cautious. The hosts managed to keep a clean sheet and they were the ones who collected another 3 important league points.
