Lech Poznań triumphed in the Greater Poland derby. John van den Brom’s squad beat Warta 1:0 in the last league game prior to the international break.
Sunday derby was unusual – the two teams faced each other at Bułgarska Street, ie. Lech’s home ground, but Warta was the host of the game. As a result, for the first time, Lech’s players sat on the guests’ bench.
However, the majority of the stands were filled with blue and white colors. On the pitch, it was also Lech that dominated. Still, their possession of the ball didn’t seem to influence the number of goal-scoring opportunities – there were very few of them. “Warta put high pressing on us, they didn’t give us any room to think when we were in possession of the ball, therefore we struggled so much in the first half,” explained coach van den Brom in the post-match press conference.
His squad delivered a better performance in the second half and managed to beat Warta’s defensive line. Afonso Sousa scored his second goal for Lech, with a beautiful, technical shot, worth three important league points. Previously, in the clash with Piast Gliwice, his successful attempt was also crucial.
Goals: Sousa (53.)
Warta: Lis - Stavropoulos, Szymonowicz, Ivanov - Grzesik, Kupczak, Kopczyński (62. Żurawski), Matuszewski - Maenpaa (71. Szmyt), Luis (71. Szczepański) - Zrelak
Lech: Bednarek - Pereira, Satka, Milić, Douglas - Murawski, Kvekveskiri (73. Karlstrom) - Velde (58. Tsitaishvili), Sousa (58. Amaral), Skóraś (73. Czerwiński) - Szymczak
