“The coach told me before the game that I should take it slow. He knows that I can play football well. My task is to work for the team the best way I can, and I believe I have done so in the recent match. I am happy with myself and the whole team,” said Dawid Kownacki.
For the first time this season the 19 year-old was a part of the starting lineup. “I got a chance from the very first minute and I am grateful for it. It felt like a debut to me, especially when I was warming up in front of the fans. It has been a long time since I felt similar. All I wanted to do was help the team win; it was all that mattered,” explained the striker who scored 2 goals for Lech last week.
In addition, the footballers were announced the starting lineup an hour before the game only. “Every one of us needed to be prepared, since we didn’t know who was going to play. I was told I would be given a chance from the first minute just an hour before the game, therefore there was no time to think, I just went on the pitch. This tranquillity was something I have lacked recently. I need to ensure in the future that I feel equally calm, because it is very helpful,” emphasized Lech’s young forward.
Kownacki scored an important equalizer in the Polish Cup match against Wisla Cracow. The youngster appeared on the pitch around the 60th minute. Meanwhile, on Saturday the striker was on the field since the referee’s first whistle and it took him 9 minutes to score a goal, following a great assist from Majewski. It was Kownacki’s first league goal this season.
“I wasn’t looking at the goalkeeper at all, I only checked if I had a defender behind me. I was sure he was following me. I also saw Maciej Gajos running down the pitch, so I cut towards the middle of the pitch and then the right flank to make space for Maciej. However, since I was left unmarked, when I received the pass, I just fired a shot,” explained Kownacki.
The young forward started scoring goals in October. He added a few to his tally when playing for the U-21 National Team, in the Polish Cup clash and now in the league match. “We will see if it is the beginning of a good period for me, but for now there is no point in talking about it. On Friday we have another game to play. If I get a chance, I am going to focus on helping the team. Individual statistics are great, but commitment to the team comes first, even it means sacrifice. If Lech wins, I will be thrilled,” told us Lech’s rising star.
