On December 3-4, the 15th edition of the Enea Lech Cup took place at the University of Adam Mickiewicz. 8 teams fought for the title and in the end, Chelsea lifted the trophy as they defeated KRC Genk in the final. Lech Poznań finished the tournament third.
The Saturday games determined the top four teams who went on to fight in the Champions League for the trophy, whereas the remaining clubs competed for ranks 5-8 in the Europa League. The Sunday schedule kicked off with a clash between Lech Poznań and Valencia. The hosts defeated the Spaniards 2:0, but where their series of good performances finished – in the key match of the knockout round, Lech lost to KRC Genk 2:3. The Belgian youngsters went through to the final where they met Chelsea who have been performing impressively, winning 7 points in the group stage.
In the Europa League, RB Leipzig and Slavia Prague dominated and, in the end, they turned out to be the two best teams which meant they would face each other in the match for the 5th place. A 1:1 draw meant the winner would be decided in the penalty shootout. In the end, the German side was better, and they finished the competition in 5th place. However, prior to that, Warta Poznań played against Southampton in the match for the 7th place and triumphed.
Lech Poznań, for the fourth time in a row, finished the tournament 3rd. In the match for the bronze medal, the hosts defeated Valencia 3:1 following goals from Wojciech Kwiatkowski, Jakub Karasiński, and Jędrzej Jaroszewski. Lech quickly took the lead and didn’t give it away until the final whistle.
Meanwhile, the final looked very different. KRC Genk scored 2 goals early in the game but Chelsea bounced back and found the back of the net twice before halftime. Neither of the teams managed to score again in the second half, hence the match went through to a penalty shootout. The side from England was better at the set piece and they triumphed in the 15th edition of the Enea Lech Cup.
